BOGAZICI UNIVERSITY SOUTH CAMPUS BEBEK GATE HOUSE

Bebek Gate House is considered to date back to the end of 19th century or the beginning of 20th century by taking into consideration the construction method, style and material characteristics. Bebek Gate House which belonged to Robert College’s until 1971 are used as the guest house in South Campus Gate of Boğaziçi University currently.

The construction was used as the lodgment building when it was firstly constructed like it is used today. The construction consisting of three wood floors and a roof established on a stone masonry basement has floor area for 130 mt2 Gateway in the basement of the building provides access to the university. Therefore, the construction is called as “Bridged Lodgment” or “Bridged Building”.

The parts rotted or lost function in the wood framework of the building were replaced and the robust parts were strengthened within the scope of the restoration. Non-qualified parts in wood facade covers, roof cover, wood door and windows were removed and the damaged parts were replaced with the authentic materials. The single-armed entrance staircase of the construction was removed and replaced with two-armed entrance staircase; the original staircase was strengthened. All electricity and mechanical installation were renewed. Bebek Gate House of which environmental planning was done has started to provide service as Rectorate Guest House in compliance with its original function.
